There are many astonishing stories in relation to the two Migrations
to Ethiopia. (For example), there is a story in relation to Zubayr .
His companions relate that once a battle took place between the King of
Ethiopia and a group of people in which the King himself had to participate.
However, the King, members of his government and his forces had to cross
a large, wide river to reach the battle ground, which they did successfully.
Although Zubayr was a guest, and Najāshī (Negus) had told his
servants to look after him while he was away, Zubayr’s companions
relate that Zubayr thought that he should also join up with the
army. He blew into a leather bag and once it was blown up, he threw it into
the river and with its aid crossed over to the other side where the battle
was taking place, and after meeting them, he returned swiftly – possibly
because they told him to do so. On his return, he informed the people that
Allāh Almighty had granted Najāshī (Negus) victory.
So Umm Ḥabība’s nikāḥ with the Noble Prophet was
solemnised by Najāshī. Once, when a marriage needed to be solemnised
in Madīna, the bridegroom’s representative asked Shaykh Zakariyyā to
conduct the nikāḥ (marriage ceremony). Shaykh stated that Qāḍī ʿAbd al-
Qādir would perform the nikāḥ, as it was he who usually performed
the nikāḥ ceremonies. In fact, he performed the nikāḥ of my brother
Muḥammad ʿAlī (who passed away in South Africa), by Bāb ʿUmar in
Masjid Nabawī in the presence and gathering of Shaykh . However,
the representative, unaware of Shaykh’s character, continued to insist
that he should perform the nikāḥ. So Shaykh stated, “Listen! During
my lifetime I have not performed anyone’s nikāḥ, except the nikāḥ of
one person whose marriage ended up in divorce.” Allāh Almighty grants
humour and wit to such people.
